Environmentally-aware refurbishment of the agora, università Milano-Bicocca

With a view to sustainability and innovation, the University Rectorate selected eco-active Active Surfaces® to repave its premises.

In recent decades, Milan underwent a comprehensive urban renaissance aimed at sustainable development which transformed the industrial city into an international destination. One of the most significant projects, the Bicocca neighborhood by Gregotti e Associati, decentralized the Milano-Bicocca State University, redeveloping obsolete industrial areas in line with an ecologically innovative perspective.

Needing to update the Rectorate and General Management offices located in Building U6 – the Agora – in keeping with new standards, the University chose Active Surfaces®, ceramic surfaces by Iris Ceramica Group. The surface’s antibacterial, antiviral, anti-pollution, anti-odor and self-cleaning properties reflect the contemporary and sustainability ideals aimed at well-being.

To renew the flooring in the Agora, a 735.5 sq.m. area located on the fourth floor of Building U6, architect Laura Vergani opted for Pietra di Basalto Active collection, in Beige 150 x 100cm format, 6mm thickness, installed by Fratelli Moncini srl. Inspired by basalt volcanic rock with its elegant, refined tones, the design is accentuated by a finish which emphasizes the three-dimensional effect. A choice in line with the university’s ecological redevelopment, since Active Surfaces® ceramics are eco-sustainable, manufactured in zero-emission factories and completely recyclable.

Alongside the sophisticated design, Active Surfaces® meet the safety and well-being requirements of the Università Milano-Bicocca, proving to be the ideal, ‘green’ solution in all places where constant cleaning and hygiene are paramount.
